The Halina’t Magtanim ng Prutas at Gulay (HAPAG) sa Barangay Project is a community-based garden managed and sustained by each barangay in the municipality. Barangay councils, barangay workers, and community members participate and work together to grow and produce fruits and vegetables naturally.
The harvested produce will be given to the community who wishes to have fresh vegetables and used for feeding activities of the barangays. Due to unfavorable weather conditions and a persistently high heat index that restricts caretakers’ work hours, the majority of the communal garden experiences a significant loss in productivity. Because of these, several of the community gardens had to be stopped as a result of this ongoing setback. To maintain the program, some barangays begin to re-establish their communal gardens as the weather starts to improve and stabilize. The local government under the administration of Mayor Luigi Gorriceta allotted funds for the provision of vegetable seeds, planting materials, and other inputs for the sustainability of the program.
Project HAPAG is a nationwide strategy aimed at capacitating the barangays, especially the households towards sustainable agriculture initiatives like community & household gardening to produce vegetables and fruits right in their own backyards.
