Aganan

Historical Background

Aganan, which is one of the largest barangays in the Municipality of Pavia, and whose name derived from the river Aganan, was once a part of Balabag. It was established in 1898 during the Spanish-American War. It was originally known as “Barrio Taytay” which means bridge, because of the bridge connecting the barangay and the poblacion.

General Features

Aganan is located 8.5 kms. west of Iloilo and is 0.5 km. from the poblacion. It had a total land area of 99.7756 hectares, 24.75 are riceland and the rest are residential and commercial. It is bounded on the northwest by Purok IV and Mali-ao; Pal-agon on the southwest; Balabag on the south; and Ungka I and the railway on the southwest.

Land feature is flat and low-level mass. 80% of land mass has an elevation of 20ft. above sea level and 20% of land mass has an elevation of 30ft.

The climate of Aganan, as part of the town of Pavia, is monsoonal consisting of two pronounced seasons, the dry – from January to April, and the wet – from May to September.

The soil in Aganan is classified under the Umingan sandy loam and Sta. Rita clay.

The barangay is bounded by Aganan River on the northwest and depend from the supply of rainwater for its riceland.

The population of Barangay Aganan based on the January 2005 Census/ Survey is composed of 1409 males and 1391 females. Family income depends on the occupation/ employment of family members.

As of January 2006, Aganan has a total of 130 business establishments ranging from sari-sari stores, poultry supplies, eatery, videoke houses, beauty parlor, hardware and construction supplies, vehicle tire dealer, computer center, pawnshops, newsstand, meat shop, cooperative store, drug stores, etc.

The barangay has a Japanese Garrison (pillbox) as tourism site. It is situated at the property of the Hipe family.

The barangay has a health center that offers health services such as immunization to children. Midwives provide pre and post-natal services for pregnant mothers who cannot afford the services of hospitals and private clinics. A day care center is also available in the barangay.

The barangay offers the services of the Barangay Tanod Brigade which is complimented by the Pavia PNP for public order and safety.
